Quick Tips

1. Have your school registration and project brief from your professor ready to qualify for student discounts.
2. It's helpful to maximize your time on location by drafting shot lists, storyboards, and scouting locations ahead of time. These tools will help you know exactly how long you'll need at each location.
3. Apply for a permit earlier than you think you need to. Depending on the complexity of the shoot, it could take two-three weeks to get approvals. Applying early helps avoid last-minute problems with police/fire requirements, parking, neighborhood notifications, and more.
4. When applying for a permit, be honest about your production size. Include the number of crew you have, equipment, vehicles, any special effects, lights/generators, or street/sidewalk interruptions your production may cause. You might need police or fire present if you have a crew of more than 40 people, prop weapons, loud noises or simulated gunfire, fake fights, generators, or other production elements that might cause disruption or increase fire risk.
5. Plan for insurance: see our insurance requirements on the FAQ page. It's easy to get insurance, and you can likely get it through your school. Check with your film department, production office, or equipment checkout office. If your school cannot provide a certificate of insurance (COI), you can purchase one through a short-term production insurance company. The City of Santa Monica must be named as an additional insured, and the certificate must provide coverage with minimum limits of $1,000,000 and include general liability, automobile liability, umbrella/excess liability, and workers' compensation insurance.
6. If you're filming on private property, you will not need a permit — but we can still help with temporary no parking signs (TNP) if you need to reserve street/meter parking. A permit is required if you'll be filming on public sidewalks, streets, parks, etc. outside of the private property. If you're unsure, check in with us at info@filmsantamonica.com.
